ABB SPAU140C

Product Brief: The SPAU140C complements SPAJ140 in a full feeder bay: SPAJ140 handles OC/EF; SPAU140C monitors VT inputs for:

  • Undervoltage (27): 3-phase or phase-phase — used for voltage-restrained O/C, bus UV load shed, generator UV trip
  • Overvoltage (59): Overvoltage protection / alarm
  • Frequency (81O/U): Over/under frequency — load shedding or generator trip
  • Rate-of-Change Frequency (df/dt — 81R): Anti-islanding / generator protection
  • Synchro-Check (25): Checks ΔV, Δf, Δφ before permitting breaker close (with SPAJ140’s close command)
  • Auto-Reclose (79): Programmable dead-time / reclose-time / shot count — can be hosted in SPAU140C (some bays split reclose here; some in SPAJ140 — depends on vintage)

It has its own LCD+keypad, BI/BO set, VT inputs (3×phase + Vn), and communicates via SPA-bus (RS-232/485) to SPAsoft or gateway.

Description

ABB SPAU140C

  • Technical Specifications (similar to SPAJ140 but VT-focused):
    • Voltage Inputs: 3 × phase VT (100/110/120 V L-L), Vn — burden ≤0.2 VA
    • Protection Functions: 27, 59, 81O/U/R, 25, 79 (opt), VTFF
    • Binary I/O: 4–6 BI (Synchro Permit, Ext Block, Test), 4–6 BO (Synchro OK, Reclose Cmd to SPAJ140 Close input, Alarm, Healthy)
    • Power Supply: Same options as SPAJ140 (24/48/110/220 V DC; 230 V AC)
    • Case / Mount / Temp / Cert: Same family as SPAJ140
    • Engineering: SPAsoft
  • Functional Features / Application / Material / Structure / Working Principle / Installation / Precautions:
    • Wired in parallel with SPAJ140 to same VT secondaries (fused separately or common fused pair)
    • SPAU140C’s “Synchro Check OK” contact wired to SPAJ140 “Close Permit” BI — prevents close if synchro fail
    • Reclose: SPAU140C can issue Close cmd to via BO → executes Close after dead-time
    • Precaution: VT polarity & fuse critical — reversed VT → UV element sees wrong magnitude; VT fuse blow → VTFF asserts → UV elements may be blocked or alarmed per setting. Perform secondary injection of VT (e.g., inject 57 V L-N → verify displayed Vab/Vbc/Vca). For synchro-check: set Δf, ΔV, Δφ limits per system study.
    • Like — legacy product; new designs use REF615 (integrates all above in one IED).
