Working Principle
The SPXCDXSFXSS continuously samples the surrounding atmosphere through its installed gas sensor. For combustible gases, it may use catalytic bead or infrared NDIR sensing. For toxic gases and oxygen, it typically uses electrochemical sensing. The transmitter converts the sensor signal into a standardized 4-20 mA output and updates the local LCD display. When gas concentration reaches a configured alarm setpoint, the transmitter activates its programmable relays and changes the backlight to red. Fault conditions are indicated by a yellow flashing backlight. The transmitter can also communicate diagnostic and measurement data through Modbus RTU.
Installation Requirements
- Install the detector in locations where target gas accumulation is most likely.
- Follow hazardous area classification and certification requirements.
- Maintain proper distance from ignition sources and ventilation effects.
- Use suitable cable glands and conduit entries.
- Connect power, 4-20 mA output, relay circuits, and Modbus wiring according to the wiring diagram.
- Ensure correct grounding and shielding for analog and communication signals.
- Mount the transmitter securely using the integrated mounting plate.
- Verify sensor type and range before commissioning.
- Perform bump testing and calibration after installation.
Precautions
- Do not open the transmitter in a live hazardous area unless permitted by site safety rules.
- Verify that the installed sensor matches the target gas and measurement range.
- Do not expose the sensor to silicone, sulfides, or other substances that may poison catalytic or electrochemical sensors unless approved.
- Perform regular calibration according to site procedures.
- Use the magnetic switch for configuration to avoid unnecessary housing opening.
- Confirm exact gas detection performance, approvals, and electrical ratings from the official Honeywell Sensepoint XCD documentation.
