ABB PSR25-600-70

Product Brief: The PSR25-600-70 is ABB’s entry-level compact soft starter for 3-phase asynchronous motors up to 25 A rated current (typically motors up to 11–15 kW @ 400 V depending on type). It provides ramped voltage increase during start (reducing inrush current & mechanical stress) and ramped decrease on stop (pump-stop / coast-to-stop). It includes built-in bypass contacts (electromechanical) that close after ramp-up — eliminating steady-state heat dissipation in thyristors and reducing panel space vs. external bypass. The “600” = max line voltage 600 V AC; “70” = control voltage 230 V AC (often 70 = 200–240 V AC coil; check label — some PSR25-600-21 = 24 V DC control).

  • Technical Specifications:
    • Rated Operational Current (Ie): 25 A (AC-53a/53b)
    • Max Motor Power: @400 V ≈11 kW (AC-3 equivalent); @500 V ≈15 kW (check ABB selection table — depends on ambient & duty)
    • Line Voltage Range: 208–600 V AC ±10 % (3-phase)
    • Control Supply Voltage: 200–240 V AC 50/60 Hz (suffix -70); other versions: -21 = 24 V DC, -01 = 100–120 V AC
    • Start / Stop Ramp Time: 0.5–60 s (adjustable via trimpots or keypad if PKP-21 display module fitted)
    • Initial Voltage (Kick-start): 30–70 % of line voltage (adjustable)
    • Bypass: Built-in electromagnetic bypass contacts (close after ramp-up; open before ramp-down)
    • Protection: Overload not included — requires external motor protection relay (e.g., EF19 / manual motor protector / electronic OLR) or use ABB PSRC with built-in protection
    • Indicators: Power (green), Run (green), Fault (red — overload/triac fault if option)
    • Mounting: DIN rail 35 mm (EN 60715) or screw-mount via flange
    • Dimensions: ≈45 mm (W) × 115 mm (H) × 130 mm (D)
    • Operating Temp.: –25 °C to +50 °C (derate above +40 °C)
    • Certifications: CE, UL, cUL, CSA, CCC, EAC
  • Functional Features:
    • Soft start (voltage ramp) & soft stop (ramp-down) — reduces water hammer in pumps, belt stress in conveyors
    • Built-in bypass → energy saving & no heatsink fan needed for most applications ≤25 A
    • Pump-stop function (controlled deceleration) to minimize surge in piping
    • Compatible with ABB PKP-21 external keypad/display for setup & diagnostics (optional)
    • Triac failure detection (some versions) — alerts if SCR shorted
  • Application Scenarios:
    • Small pump (circulating, booster) — soft start to reduce water hammer
    • Conveyor / agitator — gentle acceleration to prevent product spill / belt jerk
    • Compressor (light start torque <40 % FLT) — check start torque requirement; PSR ok for low-inertia starts
    • Retrofit of direct-on-line starter where inrush current or mechanical shock is problematic
  • Material & Structure:
    • Housing: Gray polyamide (PA66), UL 94 V-0; aluminum heat-sink fins (for start transient dissipation)
    • Terminals: Screw (M4/M5) — line (L1/L2/L3) & motor (T1/T2/T3); control terminals spring-cage or screw
    • Bypass contactor: Silver alloy (AgCdO / AgSnO₂) — rated for motor FLC
  • Working Principle:

During start command, the thyristors are gated with increasing firing angle → motor terminal voltage ramps from initial voltage (kick-start %) to full line voltage over set ramp time → when full voltage reached, built-in bypass contactor closes → thyristors stop conducting (no dissipation). On stop command, bypass opens → thyristors ramp voltage down over stop-ramp time → motor coasts/decels. If external overload trips, starter is inhibited from restarting.

  • Installation Requirements:
    • Mount on DIN rail with ≥50 mm above/below for airflow (heatsink)
    • Wire L1/L2/L3 from line; T1/T2/T3 to motor; earth motor frame & PSR PE terminal
    • Connect control supply (230 V AC for -70 version) to A1/A2; connect Start/Stop contacts (NO Start, NC Stop) to run/stop terminals — typical 2-wire or 3-wire control selectable via DIP or wiring
    • Set start ramp, initial voltage via trimmers (or PKP-21 if fitted)
    • Verify motor FLC ≤25 A & start torque adequate — if heavy start torque (>40 % FLT) consider PST(B) series
    • Install upstream motor overload protection (separate OLR / MCP) — PSR does NOT contain thermal overload
  • Precautions:
    • PSR25 is NOT a motor protection device — you MUST provide short-circuit protection (MCCB/fuse) and overload protection (OLR or electronic) upstream/downstream
    • For high-inertia loads (centrifuges, large fans) start current duration may exceed thyristor rating — check I²t & starting time against PSR capability — may need PST(B) series
    • Do NOT use for plugging / reversing duty — thyristors not rated for reverse braking
    • Ensure control voltage matches nameplate — applying 400 V AC to 230 V control fries coil instantly
    • Bypass contactor clicks audibly at end of start — if no click, check control wiring & start signal
