Woodward 8553-940

Product Introduction:
The Woodward 8553-940 is the core module of the ProTech 203 overspeed protection system. It monitors three independent MPU signals to provide SIL3-compliant Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) overspeed protection for steam and gas turbines.

Description

Woodward 8553-940

Technical Specifications:

  • Certification: TÜV SIL3, CE.
  • Input Channels: 3 independent MPU inputs.
  • Response Time: < 20ms.

Functional Features:

  • Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR): Employs 2oo3 (2-out-of-3) voting logic to ensure maximum safety while preventing nuisance trips.
  • High-Speed Suitability: Perfectly replaces traditional mechanical flyweights, remaining highly accurate even at speeds >10,000 RPM.
  • Online Testing: Supports partial stroke testing or channel testing without tripping the turbine.

Application Scenarios:
Critical safety protection for high-speed turbines, large gas turbines, and vital industrial drive equipment.

Performance Parameters:

  • Overspeed Setpoint: Continuously adjustable from 1% to 120% of rated speed.
  • Contact Capacity: 2A @ 24VDC.

Material Composition:
Military-grade high-reliability electronic components housed in a fully enclosed metal shielded case.

Structural Features:
Standard 19-inch rack or independent panel mounting. Front panel features clear channel status, fault indicators, and test buttons.

Working Principle:
Continuously samples three speed signals. Internal microprocessors perform cross-comparison and logical voting. If two or three channels simultaneously exceed the threshold, it immediately de-energizes the safety relay to trigger an emergency shutdown.

Installation Requirements:
Must be installed independently from the regular governing system. Sensor cables must be strictly shielded and routed in separate conduits.

Usage Precautions:
As a life-safety device, internal parameters must never be altered arbitrarily. Only professionally trained personnel should conduct periodic calibration and testing.
