ABB DCF804-0050

Product Introduction DCF804-0050 is a fully controlled four-quadrant single-phase field converter designed for ABB high-power DC drive systems. It supplies adjustable bipolar DC excitation current to the field winding of DC motors. It supports bidirectional field current flow, enabling field weakening and reverse excitation for high-speed motor operation.

Technical Specifications Single-phase AC input range 110 V to 500 V AC ±15%; continuous field output current 50 A, 60-second overload capacity 75 A; bipolar output voltage ±450 V DC; built-in 30 mH line reactor; forced cooling fan with nominal airflow 120 m³/h; IP00 protection rating, optional IP21 kit; operating ambient temperature -25 °C to +70 °C at full rated load; communication via DriveBus fibre link and Ethernet diagnostic port.

Functional Features Four-quadrant thyristor control supports forward and reverse field current; high-precision closed-loop field current regulation; fast current limit and overcurrent protection; internal current measurement via AC current transformer; fan fault monitoring and overtemperature shutdown; parameter storage in non-volatile memory; diagnostic data accessible via Ethernet service port.

Application Scenarios Heavy-duty DC rolling mill drives, large DC motor winder systems, mine hoist DC drives, paper machine main DC drives, high-power DCS880 drive field excitation retrofit.

Material Composition Sheet metal enclosure; FR4 control PCB; high-power thyristor semiconductor modules; aluminium alloy heat sink; brushless cooling fan; high-current copper busbars; surge varistors and snubber circuits; fibre-optic communication transceivers.

Structural Characteristics Cabinet floor mounting unit; power terminal blocks on lower section for AC input and field winding output; control and fibre connectors on upper section; heat sink arranged along the forced air flow path; power components isolated from low-voltage control electronics.

Working Principle The single-phase AC supply feeds the internal thyristor bridge. The control microprocessor adjusts thyristor firing angles to produce regulated bipolar DC current for the motor field winding. Current feedback signals close the regulation loop. The four-quadrant topology allows energy regeneration back to the AC supply during field current reduction.

Installation Requirements Mount the module inside a ventilated electrical cabinet; connect field winding cables with specified cross-section copper conductors; install external fuses on the AC input side; separate field power cables from low-voltage instrument wiring; verify fibre polarity before linking to the main drive controller.

Operation Notes Check fan rotation direction after power-up; confirm field winding insulation resistance before applying excitation current; do not remove protective covers while the unit is energised; reduce load current when cabinet ambient temperature exceeds 50 °C.
