ABB PM902F

Product Brief: The PM902F is a CPU module for ABB Freelance — ABB’s hybrid DCS/PLC system (combines DCS functionality with PLC compactness). It is based on AC 800F hardware platform but runs Freelance runtime (not 800xA). It handles up to several hundred I/O points (local S800 I/O on ModuleBus + remote I/O via Profibus DP / Modbus TCP / Ethernet/IP) and provides continuous + sequential control with Freelance’s built-in operator station capability. “F” suffix = Freelance (vs “M” = 800xA / AC 800M). PM902F is the entry/mid-level Freelance CPU — higher models (PM903F / PM904F) offer more memory & ports.

Description

ABB PM902F

  • Technical Specifications (typical PM902F):
    • Application Memory: 2 MB / 4 MB (retentive) — check exact suffix; enough for small-to-med plant unit
    • Flash: 8–16 MB (OS + project)
    • Cycle Time: Configurable 10 ms – 2000 ms; typical 100 ms continuous task
    • I/O Capacity: ≤~500–1000 physical I/O points (depends on mix & comm load); local S800 I/O up to 12 modules on TB807/TB820; remote I/O via Profibus DP (CI854), Modbus TCP (CI871), Ethernet/IP (CI871)
    • Interfaces:
      • 2 × Ethernet 10/100 Mbps (RJ45) — for Freelance Plant Network (operator stations, engineering, remote I/O gateways)
      • 1 × RS-232/485 (service / Modbus RTU)
      • CEX-Bus slot (for fieldbus cards)
      • ModuleBus (local S800 I/O)
    • Redundancy: Some Freelance CPUs support redundancy (PM902F usually single; PM904F often redundant pair) — check if your model supports hot-standby
    • Power: 24 V DC from Freelance baseplate (PS831 / SD822 etc.)
    • LEDs: Run, Err, Com, Bat Low
    • Operating Temp.: 0 °C to +60 °C
    • Mounting: Freelance baseplate (BC810F / BC820F) — leftmost slot
    • Engineering: DigiVis / Freelance Engineering Tool (Control Builder F)
    • Certifications: CE, UL, cULus, ATEX Zone 2
  • Functional Features:
    • IEC 61131-3 (FBD/LD/ST/SFC) within Freelance environment
    • Integrated process graphics — no separate SCADA buy; operator stations connect directly via Ethernet
    • Built-in trend (short-term), alarm list, recipe
    • Local + remote I/O mixing — S800 local rack + Profibus DP remote stations (ABB S800, S200, 3rd-party)
    • Online changes (qualified) without stopping process
    • Time sync via NTP
  • Application Scenarios:
    • Small-to-med process plant (pharma skid, F&B batch, water treatment, small power BOI)
    • Machine-level control with distributed operator interface (Freelance DigiVis stations)
    • Retrofit of older AC 800F / Freelance 2000 nodes
    • Skid-mounted package unit with local HMI + Ethernet to plant network
  • Material & Structure / Working Principle / Installation / Precautions:
    • Mount BC810F baseplate on DIN rail; insert PM902F; add CEX cards if needed (CI854 for Profibus DP etc.)
    • Connect 24 V DC PSU to baseplate; connect Ethernet to plant switch / operator station
    • In Freelance Engineering: create project → set CPU = PM902F → assign I/O → download
    • Verify Run LED green; check I/O communication
    • Precaution: Freelance project file is different from 800xA — PM902F CANNOT run 800xA AC 800M application; ensure you use Control Builder F / DigiVis Engineering. Firmware version must match Freelance release — check compatibility matrix. For redundant config (if supported on your sub-type) — both CPUs identical; sync cable as per BC820F.
