ABB SPA-ZC400

Product Brief: The SPA-ZC400 is a DIN-rail mounted communication gateway used in panels containing SPA-series relays (SPAJ140, SPAU140C, SPACOM etc.) to connect them to a plant DCS, SCADA, or engineering PC. It:

  • Polls up to N SPA IEDs via the SPA-bus (daisy-chained RS-485 inside panel at 9600–19200 bps)
  • Maps IED status bits, measured values, alarm words to Modbus registers / IEC 60870-5-103ASDU / DNP3 points
  • Provides an RS-232 front port for local laptop (SPAsoft) connection — can also act as protocol converter
  • Powered from 24 V DC (often same PSU as SPA rack)

Description

ABB SPA-ZC400

  • Technical Specifications:
    • SPA-Bus Interface: RS-485 (daisy-chain to SPA IEDs’ COM ports)
    • Upstream Interfaces: 1 × RS-232 (D-sub 9, to PC), 1 × RS-485 (to SCADA — Modbus RTU / 60870-5-103 / DNP3)
    • Protocols Supported: SPA-bus (to IEDs), Modbus RTU Slave (to SCADA), IEC 60870-5-103 Slave, DNP3.0 Slave, ASCII (for config)
    • Max SPA IEDs per ZC400: Typically 16–32 (practical limit by poll time)
    • Power: 24 V DC (18–30 V), typ. 3 W
    • Indicators: PWR, COM (SPA-bus active), TX/RX LEDs
    • Mounting: DIN rail 35 mm
    • Dimensions: ≈45 mm (W) × 110 mm (H) × 70 mm (D)
    • Operating Temp.: –20 °C to +55 °C
  • Functional Features / Application / Material / Structure / Working Principle / Installation / Precautions:
    • Used to integrate legacy SPA relay panels into modern SCADA that expects Modbus/DNP3 — avoids ripping & replacing relays
    • Configure via PC (ZC400 config tool) — assign IED node addresses (set via DIP on SPA IED or software), map analog values (I, V, P, Q) & digital status/alarm bits to Modbus register map
    • In SCADA: poll ZC400as Modbus slave — reads/writes relay bits (ack alarm, change setting group if unlocked)
    • Precaution: SPA-bus termination resistor (120 Ω) required at last IED on daisy-chain — ZC400 may have jumper for termination if it is last node; otherwise add external resistor. Keep ZC400 firmware version compatible with SPA IED firmware — older ZC400 may not support newer SPA IED register extensions — check ABBcompatibility note if mixing old/new SPA units.
    • For new projects — prefer REF615 with native IEC 61850/Modbus — eliminates need for .
