ABB NTCL01

Product Overview:
The ABB NTCL01 is a critical communication infrastructure component originally developed by Bailey Controls (now part of ABB) for the INFI-NET and Bailey INFI 90 / Symphony Harmony distributed control systems (DCS). It provides essential impedance matching and signal termination for the network’s communication links, ensuring data integrity across the control loop.

Category: SKU: ABB NTCL01

Description

ABB NTCL01

Technical Specifications:

  • System Compatibility: Bailey INFI 90, Net 90, Symphony Harmony INFI-NET.
  • Power Supply: 24 V DC (sourced from the system backplane).
  • Operating Current: Typical 15.8 mA, Maximum 19.7 mA.
  • Terminal Resistance: Configurable via onboard jumpers (Standard INFI-NET setting: 120Ω).
  • Cable Compatibility: Twinaxial and Coaxial communication cables.
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to 70°C.

Functional Features:

  • Impedance Matching: Eliminates signal reflections at the physical end of the INFI-NET communication loop by providing a precise 120Ω termination resistance.
  • Signal Conditioning: Maintains signal integrity and prevents packet loss or intermittent communication failures caused by impedance mismatches.
  • Hardware Configuration: Features physical jumper settings for easy field configuration of termination resistance without software tools.
  • Passive Reliability: Contains no active microprocessors; relies on precision passive components for maximum hardware reliability.

Application Scenarios:

  • Termination of INFI-NET or Plant Loop communication networks in power generation plants.
  • DCS network infrastructure in petrochemical and refining facilities.
  • Retrofit and maintenance of legacy Bailey INFI 90 control systems.
  • Ensuring network stability during DCS migration or expansion projects.

Performance Parameters:

  • Network Length Support: Maintains signal integrity on INFI-NET segments up to 1200 meters.
  • Power Consumption: Extremely low power draw (< 0.5W), operating entirely on backplane power.
  • Humidity Tolerance: Operates reliably in 5% to 90% relative humidity (non-condensing at ≤55°C).

Material Composition & Structural Characteristics:

  • Form Factor: Field Termination Panel (FTP) mounted module.
  • Dimensions: Approximately 96.5 mm (H) × 236.2 mm (W) × 221.0 mm (D).
  • Weight: 0.3 to 0.48 kg.
  • Interfaces: BNC coaxial connectors and screw terminals for twinaxial cable connections.
  • Certifications: CSA (General Purpose), CE compliant.

Working Principle:
When a digital communication signal travels down a transmission line and reaches an open end, it reflects back, causing destructive interference and data corruption. The NTCL01 is installed at the physical end of the network. Its internal precision resistor network absorbs the arriving signal energy, matching the characteristic impedance of the cable and preventing reflections. This guarantees clean, error-free data transmission across the DCS network.

Installation Requirements:

  • Physical Location: Must be installed at the absolute physical end of the INFI-NET communication loop.
  • Mounting: Securely fastened to the designated Field Termination Panel (FTP) or NFTP01 rack.
  • Jumper Setup: Verify and set the 120Ω termination jumpers according to the specific network topology before connecting cables.
  • Cable Connection: Connect the twinaxial or coaxial cable securely to the BNC or screw terminals, ensuring no stray strands cause short circuits.

Usage Precautions:

  • Critical Spare: Because the Bailey INFI 90 platform is End-of-Life (EOL), this module is a critical spare. Maintain a buffer stock as replacements are limited to New Old Stock (NOS).
  • No Active Diagnostics: Since it is a passive device, it does not report faults to the DCS. If network communication fails, physically inspect the NTCL01 and its connections.
  • Environmental Protection: Ensure the control cabinet is sealed against corrosive atmospheres and excessive moisture.
  • Do Not Remove Under Power: Never disconnect or remove the termination unit while the network is active, as this will immediately crash the communication loop.
