Description

Black Box RS232/422/485

Technical Specifications Bidirectional signal conversion between RS232 and RS422/485; optional galvanic isolation; data rate support up to standard serial baud rates; terminal block for RS422/485 bus wiring; DB9 connector for RS232 host connection; powered from serial signal or external DC supply.

Functional Features Converts unbalanced RS232 signals to differential RS422 or RS485 bus signals. Differential bus design supports long transmission distances and multi‑drop device networks. Isolation models break ground loops between separate equipment power domains. Onboard surge protection clamps voltage transients induced on field serial wiring.

Application Scenarios Factory serial instrument networks, building automation control panels, PLC serial links, remote sensor data collection and legacy industrial equipment serial communication upgrades.

Performance Parameters Low signal propagation delay; high common mode noise rejection for differential bus; robust surge withstand capability; transparent data conversion without altering serial data content.

Material Composition Enclosure is flame retardant ABS plastic; internal PCB is FR‑4 substrate; serial drivers and isolator chips are industrial grade; DB9 connector shells are nickel plated metal; terminal blocks use nickel plated copper conductors.

Structural Characteristics Small rectangular desktop or DIN rail mount housing; DB9 male or female RS232 port on one side; screw terminal block for RS422/485 A, B and ground signals on the opposite side; power indicator LED.

Working Principle RS232 single ended voltage signals from the host device enter the unit. Driver circuits convert these signals into balanced differential A and B lines for RS422/485 transmission. Received differential bus signals are converted back to level signals for the host port. Automatic direction control manages transmit and receive timing for half duplex RS485 operation.

Installation Requirements Select two wire or four wire bus wiring according to RS485 device requirements. Install termination resistors at the physical extreme ends of the RS485 bus. Ground the shield at one single point for the field bus cable. Configure half duplex or full duplex operation via internal jumpers or configuration switches.

Precautions for Use Do not exceed the maximum number of nodes permitted on the RS485 bus. Avoid running serial bus cable parallel with high power AC cables. Verify bus polarity of A and B lines to prevent communication failure.
