Foxboro FBM211

Product Introduction
The FBM211 is a foundational I/O module in the Foxboro I/A Series 200 family. It is a versatile fieldbus module designed for direct connection to field devices, providing analog or digital input/output capabilities with high channel isolation.

Description

Foxboro FBM211

Technical Specifications

  • Module Type: Analog/Digital I/O Fieldbus Module.
  • Channel Count: Typically 8 or 16 channels, depending on the specific variant.
  • Signal Types: Supports 4-20mA, 0-10V, RTD, Thermocouple, and discrete 24VDC signals.
  • Bus Interface: Connects to the redundant 2 Mbps module fieldbus.

Functional Features

  • Channel Isolation: Each channel is electrically isolated from others and from the system ground, preventing ground loops and common-mode interference.
  • Self-Diagnostics: Continuously monitors channel health, detecting open circuits, short circuits, and out-of-range conditions.
  • Hot-Swappable: Can be replaced without powering down the system or affecting other channels.
  • Software Configuration: Signal type, range, and filtering are configured via software, eliminating hardware jumpers.

Application Scenarios
The workhorse of process control, used for monitoring temperatures, pressures, flows, and levels, as well as controlling valves and motor starters in virtually every industry.

Performance Parameters

  • Accuracy: Typically ±0.1% of span or better.
  • Update Rate: Configurable, typically down to 50ms for fast loops.
  • Isolation Voltage: 1500Vrms channel-to-channel and channel-to-ground.

Material Composition
High-reliability components on a multi-layer PCB with conformal coating. Housed in a rugged, flame-retardant plastic enclosure.

Structural Characteristics
Compact single-width module. Front panel features per-channel status LEDs and a barcode label for easy identification. Rear connector mates with the FTA.

Working Principle
The module’s internal microcontroller polls its input channels, performs A/D conversion, applies scaling and filtering, and timestamps the data. This data is packetized and sent over the 2 Mbps fieldbus to the controller. For outputs, it receives commands from the controller and performs D/A conversion or digital switching.

Installation Requirements
Must be plugged into a compatible FTA (like the RH916TA) and mounted on the I/O baseplate. Requires configuration in the DCS engineering database.

Usage Precautions

  • Always match the FBM211 variant to the correct FTA for proper signal wiring.
  • Do not apply signals exceeding the module’s maximum ratings.
  • Use shielded twisted-pair cable for analog signals and ground the shield at the FTA only.
