Description
Woodward 8200-205
Technical Specifications
- Product Type: Digital Overspeed Trip Device.
- Series: ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection.
- Input Voltage: 120 Vac/dc (88–132 Vac / 90–150 Vdc).
- Trip Logic: De-energize-to-Trip (fail-safe).
- Voting Logic: 2-out-of-3 hardware vote.
Functional Features
- Triple Modular Redundancy: Consists of three independent, identical speed-sensing units, each with its own power supply and magnetic pickup.
- Fail-Safe Design: The de-energize-to-trip logic ensures the machine shuts down in the event of a power loss or internal fault.
- Online Self-Test: A built-in frequency generator allows individual units to be tested while the prime mover is running, with the other two units maintaining full protection.
- User Interface: Features three 2×16 line LCDs and a touchpad on the front panel for easy configuration and status monitoring.
Application Scenarios
Essential for protecting steam turbines, gas turbines, turbo-expanders, and other high-speed rotating equipment in power generation and industrial processing facilities.
Performance Parameters
- Operating Temperature: -25°C to +60°C (-13°F to +140°F).
- Display Temperature: -15°C to +60°C (+5°F to +140°F).
- Enclosure Rating: NEMA 4/4X, IP54 (IP65 with optional stainless steel hubs).
Material Composition
Housed in a rugged, corrosion-resistant enclosure suitable for harsh industrial environments. Internal electronics are conformal-coated for protection against moisture and contaminants.
Structural Characteristics
A compact, wall-mounted or panel-mounted unit measuring 19″ W x 12.244″ H x 5.62″ D. Weighs approximately 13 lbs 1 oz. Features a key lock for security and LED performance indicators.
Working Principle
Each of the three units independently monitors the speed signal from its magnetic pickup. The system uses a 2-out-of-3 voting logic: if two or more units detect an overspeed condition, the trip relay is activated. This design prevents false trips from a single faulty sensor while ensuring safety if a genuine overspeed occurs.
Installation Requirements
Mount in a location within the specified temperature range. Connect three magnetic pickups and the 120 Vac/dc power supply. Ensure proper grounding and use shielded cables for speed sensor inputs.
Usage Precautions
- All three units must be programmed with identical trip setpoints to ensure proper voting logic.
- Perform regular self-tests and proof tests as per the maintenance schedule.
- Never bypass the overspeed protection system.
