Foxboro FCP270

Product Introduction
The Foxboro FCP270 is a high-performance, distributed, and optionally fault-tolerant field-mounted controller designed for the Foxboro I/A Series and Foxboro Evo process automation systems. It serves as the core processing unit for executing complex regulatory, logic, timing, and sequential control strategies, as well as performing data acquisition and alarm management directly at the process level.

Description

Foxboro FCP270

Technical Specifications

  • Processor: 32-bit RISC microprocessor (AMD Elan SC520) running at 100 MHz.
  • Memory: 16 MB SDRAM (with ECC) and 32 MB Flash memory.
  • Communication: 100 Mbps Fiber Optic Ethernet for control network connection; supports 2 Mbps or 268 Kbps HDLC fieldbus.
  • I/O Capacity: Supports up to 32 Series 200 FBMs natively, expandable to 128 FBMs with FEM100.
  • Power Supply: 24 VDC redundant input.

Functional Features

  • Patented Fault Tolerance: Utilizes a unique dual-processor architecture where both modules run in parallel, comparing data bit-by-bit to ensure zero false data transmission during a failure.
  • High-Speed Processing: Capable of executing up to 10,000 control blocks per second with scan cycles as fast as 50 ms.
  • Online Maintenance: Supports online image updates and module replacement without shutting down the process.
  • GPS Time Synchronization: Ensures precise event timing and data logging across the distributed network.

Application Scenarios
Widely deployed in critical process industries including oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, and pharmaceuticals, particularly in harsh environments requiring high availability and deterministic control.

Performance Parameters

  • Power Consumption: Maximum 8.5 W per non-fault-tolerant module.
  • Environmental Rating: ISA S71.04 Class G3 (Harsh environments).
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to +60°C (+32°F to +140°F).
  • Humidity: 5% to 95% non-condensing.

Material Composition
Housed in a rugged, die-cast aluminum enclosure that provides excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and thermal dissipation. Internal PCBs are conformal-coated to protect against moisture, dust, and corrosive gases.

Structural Characteristics
Compact modular form factor designed for DIN rail or baseplate mounting. Features front-panel LEDs for power, communication, and fault diagnostics, and integrates seamlessly with Series 200 Fieldbus Modules (FBMs).

Working Principle
The FCP270 continuously scans connected FBMs for process data, executes the user-defined control strategy in real-time, and writes control outputs back to the FBMs. In fault-tolerant mode, the primary and secondary processors synchronize their memory states; if a discrepancy or hardware failure is detected, the healthy processor assumes control instantly without disrupting the process.

Installation Requirements
Must be installed in a properly grounded enclosure. Requires standard 100 Mbps multimode fiber optic cabling (MT-RJ or LC connectors) for network connection. Adequate ventilation is not strictly required due to low power dissipation, but ambient temperature limits must be respected.

Usage Precautions
Always ensure the redundant power supply is active. When replacing a fault-tolerant pair, verify synchronization status before removing the faulty module. Avoid exposing the module to direct sunlight or extreme thermal shock.
