NI PCI-6229

Product Overview
The PCI-6229 is an M Series multifunction data acquisition device from National Instruments. It integrates analog input, analog output, digital I/O, and counter/timer functions in a single PCI card. The device provides 32 single-ended or 16 differential analog input channels, 16-bit resolution, and a maximum aggregate sampling rate of 250 kS/s. It is designed for mid-speed, high-channel-count measurement tasks in industrial automation, laboratory testing, equipment validation, and process monitoring. NI has marked the PCI-6229 as mature or no longer available for new designs, and recommends the PCIe-6323 as a replacement for new applications.

Working Principle
The PCI-6229 samples analog input signals through its multiplexed 16-bit ADC. Selected channels are converted according to the configured scan list, sampling rate, and input range. Digital data is transferred to the host computer through the PCI bus using DMA or interrupt-based transfers. The four 16-bit analog outputs generate controlled voltage signals for actuators, drives, or waveform generation. The 48 digital I/O lines read or drive TTL-level signals, and the correlated DIO feature allows digital operations to follow the same timing engine as analog acquisition. Two 32-bit counters support frequency measurement, pulse counting, position decoding, and timing tasks.

Installation Requirements

  • Install the card into a compatible PCI slot.
  • Ensure the host power supply can provide +5 V at up to 1.7 A.
  • Connect analog signals using shielded cables and proper grounding.
  • Keep analog input wiring separated from high-voltage and high-current cables.
  • Configure channel mode, input range, sampling rate, and trigger source in NI-DAQmx.
  • Assign digital I/O direction and correlated DIO timing in software.
  • Verify calibration status before precision measurements.

Precautions for Use

  • The PCI-6229 is considered mature or no longer available for new designs; consider PCIe-6323 for new projects.
  • Do not exceed the specified input voltage and common-mode limits.
  • The 250 kS/s rate is an aggregate rate shared across all active analog input channels.
  • Use signal conditioning for current, high-voltage, thermocouple, or isolated measurements.
  • Avoid using the device for safety-critical functions unless the complete system is certified.
  • Confirm exact pin assignments, accuracy specifications, and environmental ratings from the official NI PCI-6229 specifications document.
